Vote for Tax Fairness on Jan. 26

The Oregon Working Families Party fights for the issues that really matter to working families - like good jobs, good schools, good healthcare, and fair taxes. But with the current budget deficit facing the state, all of these things are on the line.

That's why the OWFP is supporting Measures 66 and 67 this January, and why we encourage you to vote yes as well.

These measures would raise a $10 minimum tax on corporations that hasn't gone up since 1931 (can you think of anything else that costs the same now as it did in 1931?), and would modestly raise income taxes on households earning over $250,000 per year in income. It's just asking the wealthy to pay their fair share for the firefighters, police officers, nurses, and teachers that work hard to deliver the vital services that keep our state running each and every day.

The budget cuts that we'll be stuck with if the measures don't pass really are drastic.

Wealthy families in the Oregon can send their kids to private schools if the public schools go to pieces. Working families can't. Our kids deserve a good education, too, but they won't get one if class sizes increase dramatically because there aren't enough teachers in the schools. That doesn't seem wise.

Wealthy families can afford to pay for expensive private care for their aging parents. Working families can't. Our parents and grandparents deserve to be looked after as they get older, but they won't be if the State is forced to lay off the home care workers who perform this demanding work every day. That's not wise, either.

As more people than ever are struggling to make ends meet, the last thing we should do is to cut back on the services that people are turning to now more than at any other time.

97.5% of Oregonians will not see their taxes go up by a single dime. We think that corporations and the wealthy should pay their fair share to keep our state great.

On January 26, please vote yes on Measures 66 and 67.
